At the Brian Battle Foundation, we are committed to promoting roadside safety for all drivers—whether you’re a truck driver, commercial driver (CDL holder), or everyday motorist. Understanding proper roadside safety measures can prevent accidents, save lives, and create safer roadways for everyone.
Why Roadside Safety Matters
Brian’s life was cut short on the side of the road. We’re advocating for awareness and action so others can come home safely.
Our goals include:
• Increase awareness of pedestrian vulnerability on highways
• Educate new CDL drivers about safety protocols
• Advocate for stronger protections and legislation
• Coming Soon:
• Petition to support improved roadside laws
• Community candlelight vigil (TBD)
• Safety training integration for truck driving schools
Staying Safe on the Road

Essential Tips for ALL Drivers

01
Move Over & Slow Down
If you see emergency vehicles, tow trucks, or disabled vehicles on the roadside, always move over to the next lane if possible. If moving over isn’t safe, reduce your speed significantly.
02
Stay Visible
Turn on your hazard lights if you need to pull over due to an emergency. This alerts other drivers to your presence.
03
Avoid Distractions
Keep your focus on the road. Texting, eating, or adjusting the radio while driving increases your risk of an accident.
04
Be Prepared & Use Roadside Assistance Services
Keep an emergency kit in your car with essentials and if your vehicle breaks down, call AAA, a towing service, or roadside assistance rather than attempting dangerous repairs yourself.
FOR CDL & TRUCK DRIVERS
Inspect Your Vehicle Before Every Trip
Conduct a pre-trip safety inspection to check brakes, tires, lights, and reflective materials.

FOR CDL & TRUCK DRIVERS
Avoid Roadside Stops When Possible
If you must stop, choose well-lit rest areas or truck stops instead of the side of the highway.

FOR CDL & TRUCK DRIVERS
Know Your Stopping Distance
Large trucks require longer stopping distances than passenger vehicles. Maintain a safe following distance to prevent collisions.

FOR CDL & TRUCK DRIVERS
Watch Blind Spots
Check mirrors frequently and use your turn signals early to alert other drivers of lane changes.
